May Highlights
We weren't really sure how many people would show up last month given 4thFridays fell on the Memorial Day weekend.  So to encourage folks to come  on  out we - once again - extended our group invitation for four or more people at $7 a head.  And much to our delight - lots of folks came out ready to spend the evening listening to some good music - not to mention good coffee (our coffee brewmister nearly ran out ) and of course good company.  It was a great show.

rufus harris

rufus harris welcomed the audience and as usual opened up the show with the band performing No Compromise, We Long to Glorify, Left With Questions, 1INeed and UMustBeBornAgain.  The band closed out the show  with - Love in What You Do.  It was cool to hear more than one attendee singing the song on the way out.

Next was Rachanee - If only we had taken time to actually know how to pronounce her name properly!  We pronounced it Rah-shah'-knee.  That's how we recorded  it  on the commercial for WMUZ and on the voice over that plays at the start of the show.

rachanee

That night Rachanee taught us the correct pronunciation.  We had placed the emphasis on the wrong syllable!   For the record it's Rah'-shah-knee.  Also for the record, she performed very well and the audience enjoyed her.  She shared tunes from her two projects Ordinary Girl and Chosen Path.  She has a sweet voice with honest, heart-felt lyrics  She exuded with personality in her performance and in the onstage interview with Rufus afterwards.

Then... Sonnie Day
  - Not only did lots of her folks come out to
sunny daysee Sonnie but there were eight in her band.  Sonnie's group was the largest group we've every had on stage  (that is, in number of musicians on stage).  They delivered a high-energy performance with melodic vocals and serious grooves.  Her songs illustrated above other things her versatility and strong vocal ability.  Sonnie Day admits sonnie day bandshe's been compared to the likes of Sade and Mary J. Blige and while you can hear those styles in her songs she chooses to use her gift for God.  She hopes to reach young and old with the Gospel message.  Her full length project will be released very soon.  We will keep you posted.

Here's A Look At What's Happening June 25th

Dance by Kelly Smith - When we received Kelly's promotional tape we were amazed at her experience and skill.  She has been singing and dancingkelly smith professionally for over ten years. She has a BA in Vocal Performance/Music Education from the University of Iowa and has been dancing since age 6.  Most recently Kelly spent two years traveling the world with Up with People and worked the last two years as a dancer in the Shoji Tabuchi Show in Branson, MO.  Since moving to the Detroit area, she has been working as a dance teacher and vocal coach.  Check out a special dance selection by Kelly this Friday.
Heaven Sown -  This band describes their music as Classic Rock with
heaven sowninfluences that include Aerosmith, Styx, and the Beatles to name a few.  These guys like to rock, but they love the Rock (no,   not the wrestler), and believe no musical style is untouchable when it comes to communicating God's word!  Heaven Sown will take the stage on Friday and share tunes from their two projects - Sowing the Seeds of Faith and Message for the Blind.

Photographer/Artist -Julia Dittberner - We'll feature some wonderful photography from this local artist displayed on panels.  Here's the story behind her work:  In July of 2003, twenty-seven people from
julia Michigan, New York, Texas, Florida, Virginia, and Indiana traveled to Far East Russia to build playgrounds at three orphanages.  The photos are of children who live at the Sadovy and Social Orphanages, which house children between four and sixteen years of age.  They lived in dorm-style rooms, had no personal possessions, and no supervision after 5pm.   The prints in this series focus on the contrast between elements of daily life and the children living in the orphanages.

rufus harris will also share some great tunes on Friday so come on down and enjoy an evening of Good  Music, Good Coffee and Good Company.
