Here We Go...
We had another great show last month.  The lineup included Beth Stalker, Paul Dozier and of course rufus harris - a very diverse combo!  It was a balanced healthy meal.

First... Paul Dozier -  Paul and wife Kathy demonstrated what wonderful servants they are.  When they arrived they looked for ways to help with setup.  They helped the coffee brewmister unload the coffee.  And Kathy also helped with the door - filling in until Mildred arrived.  Then the guitarist extraordinaire took the stage.

Paul once again thrilled us with his

sensitivity to the Lord, his melody and
accuracy.  You could sense his obvious love for the Lord.  He shared tunes from his two projects - On a Glorious Journey and his praise and worship project - Committed.
Paul's intricate guitar work and smooth style has inspired  many guitarists.  He told us a while back that he came from a family of guitar players and his performance last month certainly demonstrated that - Big Time!

Beth Stalker - Beth's innocence, purity, and love for Christ was obvious in her performance.   You could sense the joy and passion in her rhymic movement on stage.  Her voice was soulful yet sweet.  She exuded confidence and humility.

She shared songs from here latest release - Here With You.  The project won her six Detroit Music Awards which she had accepted just two nights before 4thFridays.  Among the awards was "best music video".  When

Rufus asked her about the ceremony, she shared that this award was very special since it was up against other videos that were heavily sex-oriented and contained profanity.  "It was exciting to see a Christian video win."  Very, very cool!

One of the songs Beth sang was one she had written for her husband - called - I Can't Imagine.  The song moved the audience including her husband - Noel who rushed the stage afterwards to give her a kiss.

Beth was accompanied by guitarist - Jim Rawlings who was a great player and  quite masterful.

Beth and Jim invited Paul Dozier to join them for the last song of their set - People Get Ready.

rufus harris - Rufus and band had opened the night and close out the night with great original tunes along with a wonderful rendition of a cover - Taking it To the Streets - written by Michael McDonald.

Last Month's Raffle - Most of you know that at every show we have a raffle where we give away free music by the artists that night.  You never know what's going to happen during the raffle.  But it's always a fun time.   Rufus usually asks either a 4thFridays attendee; guest performer; or band member to help draw the two winning tickets.  Last month he asked Beth to lend a hand and she was happy to oblige.

Now, Rufus is always on the lookout for folks who claim to have the winning ticket.  So it's very important to know the ground rules when participating in the 4thFridays raffle.  They are quite simple - look at the numbers on your ticket as they are read and if they match, then you bring your ticket up to the stage to collect your prize.  Sounds simple enough, right?  Well last month excitement got the best of our second raffle winner.  When her numbers were read, she jumped up and quickly ran up to the front to collect her price without the winning ticket in hand.  When Rufus asked for it she was empty handed and had to run back to her seat to retrieve it.  The audience laughed because Rufus had warned Beth beforehand that she had to be careful with some of "these folks."

Here's what's coming up on May 27th...

David Ivey - has been sharing the gospel in song across the United States and abroad for most of his life. As a founding member of one of Gospel's most successful groups, Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ, Ivey has performed lead and background vocals on numerous commercially successful and well-honored albums. A member of Dunamis Outreach Ministries in Detroit, Ivey currently serves as one of the music department's praise and worship leaders.  As a seasoned music minister, he understands that people are looking for the presence of God and not another performer; therefore, his prayer is that people are blessed and lives are changed through his music. A devoted husband and father, Ivey enjoys spending quality time with his wife of nine years and his two daughters. He attributes much of his inspiration to the time spent with his family.  He'll take the stage on May 27th and share tunes from his two projects - The Bottom Line and Your Today.  More at http://www.davidiveyonline.com/index2.html.

Sam Dougherty - shares the good news of the Gospel and the victory Jesus has had in his life through this ministry.  His debut CD - Six Strings and God is a collection of original songs that share the testimony of his walk to Christ. Nearly 1500 of these CD's were sold and distributed with very little promotion. Through this ministry he has been able to minister to youth, adults and the elderly. The music God gives Sam touches every age and walk of life. Sam also performed as a platform artist with Operation Starting Line, which is a collaboration of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Campus Crusade, Prison Fellowship, Promise Keepers and many more nationally recognized ministries. Sam has also performed at County Fairs, many coffee houses, festivals and churches across the state of Michigan and Indiana.

He leads worship at Bible studies and outreaches and is very active in his own church as a member of the praise team.  Sam is married with two children who are an important part of his ministry and second to only Jesus in his life.
Currently he is working on his first full production CD with 15 new songs to be released
May 27, 2005 called - So Real. This project was fully funded by his loyal fans and supporters. He feels that their obedience to Christ made this all possible. Sam considers this CD to be a great tool for God and hopes you will be blessed when you hear it.  More at http://www.sixstringministry.com/home.html.

And the houseband rufus harris - will share a tunes as well with band members Sidney Howard (keys) Jeannine Gardner (drums) and Charles Weldon (bass).

Coffee - Our brewmister invites you stop by the coffee table to enjoy this month's featured flavor - Vermont Maple.  Also enjoy popular Purple Passion Tea.  And of course there will be de-caf and the 4thFridays house blend for those who like it strong and robust.

We'd also like to thank our brewmister - Lawrence Strong.  Last month knowing that the 4thFridays' crew doesn't always have an opportunity to get a cup of coffee because of the busyness and since we have run out of coffee in the past, he placed a pot aside for us.

Raffle - With admission, you'll receive a ticket for our raffle.  The drawing is held near the end of the show. You can win music and coffee in a little canvas tote.  (Make sure you bring up your ticket to claim your prize!)

Something To Think About... by Rufus and Denise

When believers really come together it's a beautiful thing!  Studies show that Metro Detroit is the most segregated region in the United States and unfortunately this reality is often reflected on Sunday mornings in our churches.  Psalms 133:1 says:

"How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity.  It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes.  It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion.   For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forever more." (NIV)

We may not totally relate to the oil running down on Aaron's beard or the dew falling upon Mount Zion but we do understand the aspect of the Lord bestowing his blessing - his presence. 4thFridays is focused on diversity which is why you'll find all kinds of music from folk to rock and from country to jazz all with the Christian message.

Every month Rufus and band along with guest artists at 4thFridays have an opportunity to pray together before the show starts.  Rufus said how special prayer was with the performers last month.  He commented, "It was so nice to have different types of musicians from different backgrounds come together for one purpose.  It was healthy."

Jubal Reunion -
Some of you may remember a coffeehouse called the Shalom House and that Rufus was in a band called Jubal.  Well a couple of weeks ago, Shalom House has a reunion which featured Jubal and a host of other local artists from the 70s and 80s including Shekinah, Keith Savoie and Jean Me.  Folks came out to hear some of their favorite tunes and meet up with friends they hadn't seen in 30 years.   Rufus along with Paul Kelley and Dan Mleczko rocked the house performing some of the best of Jubal tunes.  It was a good time.  (In photo from l to r: Paul Kelley, Rufus and Dan Mleczko.
