February Highlights -

We had another great show last month. Tracy Price started off the evening with an inspiring reading from the Poet’s Corner.   She read a selection from Oswald Chambers book Our Brilliant Heritage.  The reading dealt with God’s commandment "to love one another as he has loved us" – a tall order.   The believers’ tendency is to most often love only: the lovely or the respectable.  Tracy’s delivery was sincere and passionate.

Then rufus harris opened with the 4thFridays theme.   Rufus welcomed the audience. The crowd was diverse and "all in". The first set included U-R and 1INeed - songs from the self-titled CD rufus harris.

Then, they ended the set with How Do You Read It?, Face to Face and My Life.  Besides the music, the stories between the tunes were meaningful.  After a short break, we had another Poet’s Corner with Tracy.

She read Oswald Chambers' writing on The Teaching of Jesus.  The first line read:

Our Lord did not come to this earth to teach people to be holy, He came to make people holy, and His teaching is applicable only on the basis of experimental redemption.

We learned that Christianity is not man’s way to serve God.  Christianity is God’s way to change man – from the inside out!  Tracy’s performance was moving.  Enter Sounds of Imani.

Sounds of Imani shared not just their music, but themselves.  They were fantastic - great vocals - great music!  However, that which was the most wonderful about S.O.I. was their obvious love for Jesus.  Their presentation was spirited, smooth and consistent.  The audience joined in praise and had a good ol’ time!

Here's a look at what's coming up this Friday, March 26th
Paul Dozier

Jazz Artist - Paul Dozier
You may know him from the band - Zamar.  He’s that fantastic guitarist that helps give Zamar its signature sound.  Paul is generating quite a buzz in the city.  His music is featured on 107.5FM and he is the host of Jazz on 3 – a great evening of Live Jazz at the Upper Room Entertainment Complex in Detroit held every 3rd Saturday.  Paul has also performed solo at 4thFridays several times in the past but this time he returns with his dynamic band.  He’ll share tunes from his latest release On a Glorious Journey this Friday.  If you love live Jazz, this show is a show not to miss!

The Poet's Corner
There will be two thought-provoking readings from Billy Graham’s book Hope for Each Day.  The first entitled Walk with God and the second – The Call of Christ.   You'll really enjoy these!

...and of course the house band rufus harris will share some great tunes at the show from both albums.

Raffle
Every 4thFridays' show includes a free raffle with paid admission. We usually raffle-off the performers' CDs.   Last month we added a coffee gift prepared by resident 4thFridays' brew mister and coffee connoisseur Lawrence Strong.  This month, we'll do it again!  Don't miss your chance to win!

Something to Think About... by Rufus
For two Sundays this month at my church (
the bridge, in Pontiac), I was asked to and was priviledged to share a message with the congregation.  My topic was "The Will of God - that is - the specific will of God for the person who is a believer in Jesus".

Here, I can not go into much detail.  However, I do want to share a few of the points which I brought out.

At the end of our regular fellowships on Sundays we conclude with "The Lord's Prayer".  In actuality, "The Lord's Prayer" is not so much the "Lord's" prayer, but the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray.  Many Bible scholars and commentators indicate that this prayer is not just a prayer for memory recital - but actually is a pattern which we should pray.

During our time of prayer:
  • Believers are to recognize their relationship with their heavenly Father. - the Creator of everything.
  • Believers are to recognize the  very, very special, holy, consecrated name of our Father  (The Father's name indicates who He is: His Character and His Authority).
  • Believers are to recognize and request that from our Father comes our daily nourishment (physically, emotionally and spiritually).
  • Believers are to recognize and request forgiveness of sin as we forgive those who sin against us.
  • Believers are to recognize and request not to be lead into temptation, but to be delivered from the plans of the adversary - the devil.
  • Believers are to recognize that forever the Kingdom, power and glory belongs to the Father
  • And although presented out of order for the message focus, believers are to recognize and request that the Father's kingdom come and that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven!

We found that the believers' conduct is governed by knowing God's will.  We found that the early church leaders encouraged believers to not be foolish, but to understand what is the will of the Lord.  We also discovered that early church leaders wrestled with this in prayer and never stopped praying that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will and that they would stand firm in it (Ephesians 6:5-8; 5:15-21; Colossians 4:12-13; 1:9-14).

Finally, the greatest encouragement is found in a prayer in Hebrews 13:20-21:

May the God of peace... equip you with everything for doing his will...

Think of the possibilities...  We are to pray for God's will.  Our conduct is to be governed by God's will.  We are to be filled with the knowledge of God's will and stand firm in it.  And then on top of all of that God equips us with everything we need for doing His will.
